Lions fall to Nazareth on final day of Buffalo State Bengal Classic

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Tanner Schroeder and Mike Perkett both scored late third-period goals for the Bryn Athyn College men's hockey team, however, the Lions rally came up short in a 4-2 loss to Nazareth in the consolation game of the Buffalo State Bengals Classic Saturday afternoon.

Bryn Athyn faced a 3-0 deficit heading into the final 20 minutes of play. The Lions controlled the final period, outshooting the Golden Flyers 17-9 and getting four power-play opportunities in a seven-minute span.

Mike Perkett finally broke through for Bryn Athyn at the 16:59 mark with his first goal of the season to make it a 3-1 affair. Just 92 seconds later, Tanner Schroeder recorded his first collegiate goal and brought the Lions within 3-2.

Vojtech Luza assisted on both goals.

The Lions would pull goaltender McKenzie Chalmers with 1:01remaining in favor of an extra attacker to try to find the equalizing goal. Nazareth's James McDonald ended the Bryn Athyn (0-2-0) threat with an empty-net goal with five seconds remaining.

Nazareth took a 1-0 lead at the 12:17 mark of the opening period on a Casey Kubara. The Golden Flyers increased the lead to three in the second on a McDonald power-play goal at 4:34 and Kubara's second goal of the game at 15:07.

Chalmers turned aside 24 shots on 27 attempts for the Lions. Nazareth's Andy Lee racked up 44 saves to earn the win.

Bryn Athyn finished 0-for-5 on the man advantage, while Nazareth was 1-for-2. The Golden Flyers owned a 29-23 edge in faceoffs.

Bryn Athyn will play its first home game of the 2018 season when it hosts Division II Southern New Hampshire on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Revolution Ice Gardens.
