BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team suffered a 6-3 setback to Buffalo State in the first game of its weekend series Saturday night in the Ice Arena.
Smirnov scored the only goal of the opening period to give the Lions a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Tanner Congdon assisted on Smirnov's team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Buffalo State (7-6-3) moved in front with a pair of goals in the first 11:01 of the second period. Zach Remers leveled the game at one 1:01 into the period and Charles Barber put the Bengals ahead 10 minutes later.
Barber's second goal of the night, coming 1:29 after Shorrock's equalizer, put Buffalo State back in the lead.
The Bengals extended their lead to 5-2 thanks to goals from Reid Bibb and Vadim Vasjonkin. Falivena brought the Lions within 5-3 when he scored for the third time this season at the 13:38 mark. The goal was assisted by Eric Higgins and Mike Perkett.
Anthony Tulipane added an empty-net goal for Buffalo State.
Goaltender McKenzie Chalmers stopped 27 shots for the Lions, while the Bengals' Trevor Micucci had 29 saves.
The two teams will conclude the weekend series with game two on Sunday, Jan. 19 in the Ice Arena at 5 p.m.
